J. Gibran Villalobos (b. 1985, Los Angeles) 

Graduate from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the Dual Masters Program in Modern Art History, Theory & Criticism and Arts Administration and Policy.  Previously a curatorial assistant at Sullivan Galleries and the Exhibitions and Collection Coordinator for the City of Glendale Public Art Program.  Currently the Assistant Coordinator for the Department of Architecture and Design at the Art Institute of Chicago and resident curator at Chicago Artists Coalition.

 

J. Gibran Villalobos is a curator and art historian based in Chicago.  He holds a dual masters in Modern Art History, Theory & Criticism and Arts Administration and Policy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.  Previously he was a public art coordinator for the City of Glendale, Arizona where he coordinated exhibitions in municipal exhibition spaces and temporary public art projects.  He has served on the Arizona-Sonora Administrators Exchange, and panels for the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the National Association for Latino Arts and Culture. 

 

He was a curatorial assistant at Sullivan Galleries for the exhibitions Opening the Black Box, Tamms Year Ten Campaign Office, and Natural Life.  His work focuses on researching the complicity between labor and public art.  His early work as a public art administrator has led to exhibitions that focus on social issues in conjunction with artistic practice. His thesis Industrial Prayers: Jannis Kounellis and the Reconstruction of Italian Identity focused on the socio-political changes in Italy during 1945 through 1968 and the Second Vatican Council.  Currently he is the Assistant Coordinator at the Department of Architecture and Design at the Art Institute of Chicago and resident curator at Chicago Artists Coalition.
